While the concept of pheromones has been around for a long time, recently, pheromone oils for people have become incredibly popular. These oils claim to make people more attractive and irresistible to potential mates. But how legitimate is it?
Pheromone oils may legitimately have pheromone compounds, but the effects are likely a result of the placebo effect. Mammals haven’t been scientifically proven to excrete pheromones. However, wearing pheromone oil likely makes the wearer more confident and, therefore, more attractive.
In this article, I’ll go into the science of scent and how it relates to attraction, how pheromone oils are made, and whether you can smell them. I’ll also discuss how effective these compounds are, if at all, and how you can release more pheromones naturally.
Understanding the Science of Why Some People Smell Good
It’s important to understand that scent plays an important role in attraction. Humans have a strong olfactory system that allows us to pick up over one trillion scents, but this has little to do with pheromones.
Scent is affected by several factors, including genetics, eating habits, hormonal changes, medication, and overall physical and emotional health. Since genetics influences smell, it makes sense that we’re subconsciously picking up some genetic information.
People who smell good to you may not smell good to others because they’re attracted to what the person’s smell says about their immune systems.
The Correlation Between Scent and Attraction
People with genetics significantly different from you, particularly concerning their immune systems, will smell incredibly good to you. Such people come across as excellent potential partners, as any offspring will have a more robust immune system as a result of the difference in your immune profiles.
Natural scent aside, we all have individual preferences of scent as well, and these come into play when it comes to attraction as well. The scents people choose to wear through perfumes, bath gels, and moisturizers also play a role in determining how they come across to you.
Odor-related memories are also incredibly strong in human minds, meaning you’ll remember how someone smelled more easily than how they looked. Smelling good is crucial to attraction, but it has less to do with the compounds in the perfumes and more to do with how they mix in with your natural scent.
How Are Pheromone Oils and Perfumes Made?
Different pheromone oils and perfumes have different compositions. For the most part, they all tend to be a mix of scented essences, musk from animals, and synthetic compounds that mimic compounds present in sweat and other bodily secretions.
The ways the perfumes are synthesized indicate the intention to offer a mix of regular perfume scents like sandalwood, mixed in with compounds that concentrate natural ‘pheromones.’
Can You Smell Everyone’s Pheromones?
However, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that mammals, including human beings, release pheromones at all and if we are capable of detecting them.
You can’t smell everyone’s pheromones because you don’t have the necessary ‘vomeronasal organ.’ What you can smell is everyone’s odor, which is distinctly different from person to person. People’s natural scent offers a lot of genetic information that you take in subconsciously.
Since the existence of human pheromones is still under study, it’s important to remember that pheromone oils are unlikely to have much effect on how attractive you appear.
This isn’t to say that pheromones have no effect at all – we simply have very little information on what effects pheromones have on attraction, if any. Moreover, attraction depends on a multitude of factors, so it’s very likely that whatever effect pheromones have is negligible.
However, most oils also contain other scents that may enhance your natural scent, and wearing these oils may make you more confident, leading to a greater sense of attractiveness.
Ways To Release More Pheromones Naturally
While there isn’t a lot of scientifically studied information about human pheromones, you can enhance the way you smell by ensuring that you’re in overall good health. Eating well, drinking enough water, exercising sufficiently, and sleeping well all contribute to a healthy hormonal balance in the body, which in turn affects your scent.
Mental health is also important, as people can typically pick up your emotions through the well you smell. Anxiety and fear tend to sour your scent, so working on becoming more confident will do wonders for how attractive your smell is to potential partners.
Final Thoughts
Pheromone oil might contain synthetic pheromonal compounds, but their effectiveness on attraction is not scientifically proven. It’s more likely that wearing these compounds makes the wearer feel more confident and approachable to people around them. This sense of confidence is perceived through scent picked up by the olfactory system in human bodies, which may be why these oils appear to attract potential partners.
